Future Me: January 4, 2019

Dear diary,

So there we were at the Osu cemetery; me lost in transition and Willemina in a whole different world of hers. The Willemina standing there was an entire being different from the Willemina blistering down the motorway at a hundred and twenty crazies an hour. Just when I was reaching my breaking point she opened her mouth and spoke the words that even the smartest being on this earth wouldn’t have expected; “My husband was the get-away driver for Ekow and his gang.”

She then began to tell her story. She said her husband was a test-driver back in Germany. He had spent close to eight years working there and was one of the few black people who were doing that particular job. Because of the nature of his job he lived a very optimistic happy go lucky life. He never fussed about anything, always looking on the bright side as well as being a practical joker.

She, Willemina, on the other hand was working as a bank teller in Accra. She wasn’t able to secure a visa to go live with him even after all the strides that had been made in technology with respect to people’s personal identification. She didn’t mind but decided to stay and work in Ghana as her husband was of the mind of coming down to stay permanently.

Sensing that they were cut from the same cloth, they decided to play a prank on the particular bank and see what comes of it. They didn’t let her know until later when things had gotten out of hand. Her husband invited Ekow home and the very moment he walked through their door she knew that this man was going to be trouble. The two spent a couple of days planning their prank of the century: Rob a bank, escape, wait out for two weeks for the hype to settle down and then return the money.

It was the perfect prank and they set out to execute it. They didn’t wear masks; they didn’t even carry a gun, just a stun gun, a toy gun and a car to get away with. The plan was for Ekow to go in and stun the police without anyone noticing and then head into one of the teller’s booth, threaten him or her to get the money for him. With that he’d coolly walk off with the money and get the hell out before anyone could call the police; that are if they even were able to get there on time.

Everything went on well until the part where he was supposed to go threaten a teller. As fate would have it Ekow entered her booth. He made no expressions that would signal his knowledge of her whatsoever. It was as if they’d never met or he was a very good actor. Everything was believable. Everything went on perfectly. Everything went on smoothly until the stunned policeman got up and started moving toward her husband. At that moment Ekow had got to the gate about to step out. In one swift motion the policeman spun around and opened fire on Ekow.

He in turn pulled out the ‘toy gun’ which miraculously started firing live bullets at the policeman. He caught a bullet in the left shoulder and another in the groin. Everyone was so shook it seemed time had stopped except for Ekow. He floated past the falling policeman and jumped right into the car as if it was routine jumping jacks. Even her husband was in a daze when Ekow got in. All he heard was “Drive”.
