iPhone 4: This Is It!

Monday was all about the iPhone 4. Although images of the iPhone had leaked earlier, there was still room for surprises. I think this is it. This is what a lot of iPhone backlashers have been waiting for. At 4.5 x 2.31 x 0.37, the iPhone 4 is the smallest smartphone ever. Looking at the specs, I expect the iPhone to sell more than any other smartphone this year and increase iOS’ market share. Let me share my thoughts on a few of the new features.
The iPhone has a 3.5-inch multi-touch display just like the iPhone 3GS but that is the only similarity in display they have. iPhone 4 comes with a Retina display which provides ‘the sharpest, most vibrant, highest-resolution phone screen’ ever. This 960-by-640 backlit LCD display boasts a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch, pixels so small — a mere 78 micrometers across — that the human eye can’t distinguish individual pixels. This means super sharp images and text like never before. This is HUGE and if you still don’t get how good this is, compare to other devices (phones, TVs, etc) out there using this Wikipedia list.
Apple took the In-plane switching (IPS) screen they put in the iPad and put it in the iPhone 4. IPS is an LCD screen technology which improves viewing angle and colour problems that LCDs have, making viewing the iPhone 4 screen from the side almost similar to viewing it from the front.
iPhone 4 spots an A4 processor just like the iPad. This will make the iPhone 4 two times faster than the iPhone 3GS. This speed will be more relevant when capturing or editing HD video. With a 5MP back camera with flash and a VGA front facing camera, iPhone 4 brings HD video recording and editing. I am not into cameras but I think it’s cool.
The iPhone’s battery has a bump. The iPhone 4 has a bigger battery than the iPhone 3GS which translates into 40% more battery life.
Facetime is one of the new features of the iPhone 4. Facetime allows for video calling over wifi. Watching the demo on the Apple site and the Engadget hands-on, I think it will be useful but not for areas with slow internet speed like Ghana. acetime will however come to networks in 2011. The reason behind this, I think is that AT&T’s 4G network won’t be ready before 2011 and Facetime over 3G will be the death of AT&T. However even though Facetime is similar to existing video calling, Apples always taste better than any other fruit. Apple has added its own flavour by allowing you to use both cameras together at the same time, allowing others to see what you see, while you see yourself on the screen.
Steve Jobs mentioned that the iPhone will be available in 88 countries. I have my bet on Ghana getting it in September. I have a strong feeling about this one. Vodafone and Orange are the two telecoms offering iPhone in Africa and since Ghana Telecom is now Vodafone Ghana, we’re definitely getting the iPhone 4.
There is something I like about Apple. The design of their products. The iPhone is a whole new design. Check out the video of the iPhone 4 here!
I can’t wait to get my hands on the iPhone 4!

The iPhone 4 has some really impressive hardware no doubt about it and it has even a die hard BB thinking…
But why does Steve Jobs always do this. Unless you get this phone direct from a carrier where are you to get a micro SIM?
The coolest thing on iPhone 4 for me is Facetime. I know bandwidth in Ghana is an issue but I still love the feature. Using both cameras at the same time to give both parties a feel of what is going on is GENIUS… Hope Apple don’t patent that….
